LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS… pero sa paglilinis ba talaga?

Mga kababayan, na-miss nyo ba ang mga araw na pwede tayong lumangoy sa Ilog Pasig? (Remember those days we could swim in the Pasig River?) Well, malayong-malayo na tayo dun (those days are long gone), pero at least may magagandang balita naman tayo! (but at least we have some good news!)

Ayon sa social media, nagkaroon ng massive cleanup sa isang ilog sa Taguig City na akala natin ay ang Ilog Pateros. (According to social media, there was a massive cleanup of a river in Taguig City that we thought was the Pateros River.) This project, spearheaded by Mike Smith, founder of Australian company Zero Co., resulted in the removal of over 100,000 kilograms of trash [Inquirer]. That’s equivalent to the weight of roughly 14 adult elephants! While impressive, it raises some important questions.

Pero teka (but wait), sandali lang (hold on a sec)…

  • Problema ng Landfill (The Landfill Problem): The Philippines generates over 20 million tons of waste annually, with Metro Manila contributing a significant portion [EMB – Department of Environment and Natural Resources]. Landfills are nearing capacity, and “out of sight, out of mind” solutions aren’t sustainable. Where does all this collected trash ultimately go?
  • Sustainable Solutions Beyond the Hype: Clean-up projects are fantastic for raising awareness, but what happens after the cameras stop rolling? Zero Co. seems to be on the right track, with their focus on tackling plastic pollution at its source through promoting zero-waste products [Inquirer].

Mga kababayan, hindi po lahat ng “Let’s Get Down to Business” moments are created equal. (My friends, not all “Let’s Get Down to Business” moments are created equal.) We need long-term solutions that address the root cause of the problem, not just quick fixes for social media clout.

So, JuanPress challenges you to do your part! Here are some actionable steps:

  • Segregate your trash properly. It makes a world of difference for recycling efforts.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle. This mantra is more important than ever.
  • Support businesses promoting sustainable practices. Your purchasing power has a voice!
  • Spread awareness. Talk to your family, friends, and community about the waste problem.

But wait, there’s more! (Pero teka, may mas marami pa!) The Philippines already has some great initiatives in place to combat waste:

  • The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003) mandates waste segregation and promotes composting and recycling efforts [DENR].
  • Many local government units (LGUs) have implemented community-based Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to sort and process recyclable materials [EMB].
  • Organizations like the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) empower communities through their “Bayang Walang Basura” (Trash-Free Community) program [Rappler].

Here’s the challenge: Do some research! See if there are similar programs or initiatives in your area. Consider supporting them or even starting your own community clean-up project.

Let’s move beyond hugot posts and create a cleaner future for ourselves and future generations.
