WordPress Settings Guide (Part 3): Permalinks & Visibility

Optimize your URL structures for clean branding and manage your search engine visibility.

In this third and final part of our configuration series, we cover Permalinks and Search Engine Visibility. These settings are highly critical because they directly impact your business’s branding, search engine ranking (SEO), and how links look when shared on social media.

🔗 1. Permalinks (Your URL Structure)

Navigate to Settings → Permalinks. Permalinks dictate the web addresses of your individual pages and products. A messy URL looks unprofessional, while a clean URL establishes trust:

    • The Standard Format: Ensure your structure is set to Post name. This removes random dates or question marks from your links, changing a messy link like yourbrand.com/?p=123 into a clean, readable yourbrand.com/about-us.
    • Product Links: If you run a WooCommerce store, scrolling down reveals the Product permalinks section. Selecting Shop base with category helps organize your product URLs logically for both buyers and search bots.
⚠️ CRITICAL NOTE: Avoid altering these settings once your website is live and indexed by Google. Changing your permalink structure later will break existing shared links, leading to frustrating 404 errors for your customers.

🔍 2. Search Engine Visibility (Going Public)

Navigate back to Settings → Reading and scroll to the bottom to verify your global indexing switch:

    • Search Engine Visibility Checkbox: Ensure that the option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unchecked when you are ready to launch. Leaving this checked blocks Google and Bing from reading your site, keeping your brand hidden from search results.

💾 Save Your Settings: Scroll to the bottom of the dashboard page and click Save Changes to secure your URL settings.

  • WordPress Settings Guide (Part 2): Discussion & Media Rules

WordPress Settings Guide (Part 2): Discussion & Media

Manage customer interactions, comment sections, and optimize your asset uploads.

In this second part of our configuration series, we will focus on managing interactions on your platform and understanding how files behave. Setting up your Discussion and Media options correctly ensures a clean, spam-free environment while keeping storage usage efficient.

💬 1. Discussion Settings (Controlling Comments & Spam)

Navigate to Settings → Discussion. This area controls how public users interact with your blog posts and pages. To keep your brand safe from spam bots, configure these critical checkmarks:

    • Default post settings: If your website is purely a business brochure or an e-commerce store, you may uncheck “Allow people to submit comments on new posts” to disable comment sections globally.
    • Other comment settings: Always check the box for “Comment author must fill out name and email”. This acts as a basic filter to stop anonymous spam.
    • Before a comment appears: For maximum security, check “Comment must be manually approved”. This ensures no random text or malicious links show up on your live site without your consent.

🖼️ 2. Media Settings (Image Scaling Standards)

Navigate to Settings → Media. This panel dictates how WordPress automatically crops and sizes images when you upload them to your Media Library:

    • Pre-configured Sizing: Website Buildy automatically sets standardized thumbnail, medium, and large dimensions behind the scenes. This ensures your layouts remain perfectly responsive across mobile screens, tablets, and desktops.
    • Organizing Uploads: Keep the checkbox “Organize my uploads into month and year-based folders” active. This maintains a clean server infrastructure, making your media assets easy to track.

🚀 Next-Gen Image Compression Active: Remember that our server framework automatically compresses your images into optimized web formats upon upload. While you do not need to alter default media pixels, always try to upload compressed files to maximize your allotted modular storage.

💾 Save Your Settings: Do not forget to scroll to the bottom of your screen and click Save Changes before leaving the page.

  • WordPress Settings Guide (Part 1): General & Reading Essentials

WordPress Settings Guide (Part 1): General & Reading

Configure your basic website identity and homepage display settings correctly.

When you log into your new WordPress dashboard, the system is already optimized and secure. However, you need to configure a few critical options to match your personal business brand. In this first part, we will focus on the General and Reading settings.

⚙️ 1. General Settings (Your Site Identity)

To access this, navigate to Settings → General on your left dashboard menu. Here are the critical options you need to update:

    • Site Title: Change this to your official business name (e.g., My Local Shop LLC). This is the text that appears on your customers’ browser tabs.
    • Tagline: Provide a brief description of what your business does in one short sentence (e.g., Premium Furniture & Appliances).
    • Administration Email Address: Ensure this is your active email. All website notifications, password reset requests, and contact form alerts will be sent here.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Do NOT change the WordPress Address (URL) or Site Address (URL) fields. Changing these will break your domain routing and completely lock you out of your website.

📖 2. Reading Settings (Your Homepage Display)

Navigate to Settings → Reading. This controls how visitors land on your website:

    • Your homepage displays: By default, our pre-installed templates select A static page.
    • Homepage Selection: Ensure that the dropdown menu next to “Homepage” is set to your actual main landing page (usually named Home or Main Layout). If you accidentally change this, your website will display a blank page or a list of blog posts instead of your custom store design.

💾 Always Save Your Changes: Whenever you modify settings in any section, scroll down to the very bottom of the page and click the blue Save Changes button, or your progress will be lost.
